Contemporary Music Writing and Production (Ages 8+)

NYCPA Contemporary Music Writing and Production

NYCPA aims to provide their students the opportunity to explore the new styles of contemporary music writing and production and the various ways in which the use of the laptop plays an integral role in the creation of most all types of modern recorded music. The goal of the course, first and foremost, is to equip students with the ability to become self-sufficient, well-rounded musicians in 2022 and beyond.

It is increasingly the case that musicians are called upon to wear multiple hats in today's ever-evolving, interdisciplinary musical landscape. For this reason, students who gain experience in the realm of music production from a young age benefit greatly in the liberated pursuit of forging their own musical path.

Music genres: pop, hip-hop, R&B, contemporary film scores, and jazz.

Each student enrolled in the NYCPA Contemporary Writing and Production class will:

  • Learn how to record oneself efficiently using MIDI technology.

  • Develop an understanding of the strengths and weaknesses of different types of virtual piano software.

  • Explore orchestral programming with Spitfire, Native Instrument's Kontakt, and Output's Arcade software.

  • Grasp the basics of how to mix and master a musical composition or track.

  • Aquire the ability to collaborate with others remotely by using music file sharing and bouncing techniques.

The work of current composers/artists across multiple genres (Nicholas Britell, Mica Levi, Brad Mehldau, Jonny Greenwood, Trent Reznor, FKA Twigs...) will frequently be referenced, analyzed and appreciated as valuable case studies.

  • Private online and in-person lessons (weekly or bi-weekly)
